“New Music Courses Hit A High Note”

Two new music industry courses at the University of Wolverhampton are proving a hit with students- with two new businesses and a debut album in the pipeline. The innovative Sound Production and Music Industry Practice courses were launched in February 2006 with Major Key Studios music production company. The courses were the first of their kind in the West Midlands.

Students benefit from the expertise of Phil Savage and Ken Banks. Phil has worked with major artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Judas Priest, Fine Young Cannibals and Duran Duran; and Ken is a top business consultant and product developer.

Phil previously ran a studio in Birmingham, which he sold to Ocean Colour Scene who famously re-named it The Moseley Shoals. He Said “It is very much a hands-on course. The more experience students get when working within a commercial environment the quicker they get the skills to enable them to trade. After two years they should be able to trade in the real market place!”

A key aspect of both courses is equipping students with real skills for the music industry-including moving with changing trends and adapting to the new ways people access music.

Ken said “We discuss innovative ways in which music can be sold and marketed; we also ensure students have the opportunity to network with people in the industry”

The courses, run at The Public, West Bromwich cover the staging and management of live performances, recording music and record sales.
